Dear Internet,
Seriously? This proves that you should have to pass some sort of test before you’re allowed to use a computer, and that America’s 14 year olds obviously need more things to do with their time.
First, you’ve got a remix album, a live album, and a soundtrack in there, and those aren’t really known for being massive sellers most of the time. Second, congratulations on picking two of her lowest-selling studio efforts to try and prove your point. When your career spans 30 years, not everything you release is going to be a smash. If Lady GaGa makes it that long, you can be sure that not every one of her albums is going to reach the highs of Born This Way.
Your argument might have succeeded if you could report accurate sales numbers. The Born This Way figure represents its worldwide sales to date, but the Madonna numbers… don’t accurately reflect anything, and I’m not sure where you came up with five million. If you added up the worldwide totals of all of those releases, they’d put BTW to shame, and even the combined U.S. sales total is upwards of six million, but that brings up that it’s unfair of you to to compare worldwide sales of one album to U.S. sales of another.
Why not compare worldwide sales of both artist’s third albums? Madonna’s True Blue sold 24 million copies worldwide, about three times what Born This Way has managed to move at this point. If you consider BTW her second album because Fame Monster is more like an EP, then Madonna still wins, because Like A Virgin sold 21 million copies worldwide. U.S. sales? Like A Virgin shifted 10 million units stateside, and True Blue sold seven million, still both leagues ahead of Born This Way’s current two million U.S. total.
I don’t understand why GaGa fans feel like they need to drag a woman who GaGa has expressed nothing but great respect for, and who GaGa wouldn’t be here without. Say what you will about how great and original Gags is (but honestly, how can you deny that she’s not working off of the Madonna blueprint at least a little?), but had Madonna not come first and paved the way, Gags would not exist. Which would be kind of nice, because then we wouldn’t have crap like this floating around the Internet. I’m just saying - respect your elders, because without them, who would you have to stan for? No one. Or, like, maybe Keri Hilson or something, but that’d just be sad.
